Is it possible to set the direction from where thumbnails are cropped? right now it is from center center, but I would need it from center top.

Unfortunately this feature is not available at the moment. One thing you can try is set the option "Thumbnail Image Resize Method" to "Fit" instead of "Crop".
This way your thumbnails will keep the aspect ratio of the original images. Note, that if that works for you, you can apply it for all existing galleries using the "Generate Images" button.
