#929 – Articles custom fiield -> Select existing gallery?

Hi!

I added a custom field to the articles using the 'Shwotime Image Galery' plugin. When I open the field in an article, I do not see an option to add an exisiting gallery here. Only the option to add new images. It is not possible to select an existing gallery or am I missing something?

Hi Jip,

No you are not missing something, this feature was never available. This feature is only available in galleries inside the editor.
Actually I am not sure if I should add a "Use existing gallery" or "Import images from other gallery" button.
Can you please provide more details about your use case?

I actually ran into this while upgrading a site to J4. I copied all the gallery images to the new site, added the gallery and images records to the database tables. On the old site the galleries were placed inside the article text. Always at the same place (at the end). I thought it would be useful to create a custom field for this. So I created the custom field and then I wanted to link the galleries to this custom field. But that is not possible.

In the mean time I manually added the custom field values (field id, article id and gallery id) to the fields table so now the are linked. From now on the galleries can now be created from the custom field. So the need for 'import / use existing' is no longer there.

Still, maybe in some cases we would prefer to have users use the component to manage all galeries and then have the option to add them (existing galleries) to the article using the custom field. In that case a 'connect to exixting gallery' option might be helpful.

Or maybe an extra custom field that does just that. SUch a field would force users to first upload a gallery using the component before the can add it to the article.

So just some thoughts on this. No direct need for it at this time though.

I was actually ready to tell you to do this manually in the database after reading the first lines, but you did that already.
I think that a "use existing" button might make sense. The only thing I need to change is what's happening when an article is deleted. Right now all the associated galleries of the custom fields are removed.
