#591 – Image rotate during upload

Status: Pending - Category: Showtime Image Gallery
 Hello Lefteris,

On my clients testsite I'm using the Shwotime Image Gallery.
I'v uploaded a few photo's by dropping them into the gallery but on the frontend you can see these images are rotated.
This is not how they appear on my PC.
How can I set this right?
Thanks!

Ton
Hi Ton,

Showtime is not modifying the images orientation. It keeps the original orientation. I guess that your images have incorrect metadata. Display of the image is different on desktop and on your browser. I guess that if you open the original image on your browser it will get displayed exactly the same way as the uploaded image.
In any case, all you have to do is rotate the images on your computer before you upload them.

We will consider adding an image editor to Showtime Image Gallery to allow basic operations like rotation. Until then the only way is to ensure the image orientation is correct before uploading.

Regards

Hello Lefteris,

I've deleted all metadata and tried again.
But this time the image rotates also.
Can it be because the height is larger than the width?

Greetings,
Ton
No this has nothing to do with the dimensions. Just open the image on your computer and rotate it. Do you have any image editing software? Are you on Windows or Mac ?

Regards

I opened the image in Photoshop, did nothing and saved it as a copy.
When I upload it now the image is not rotated.
But now I have to find out why this happens.
Because the file upload will be done by my client and I don't think he has Photoshop.
So can it be the camera settings that causes this you think?
There is no need to use Photoshop. Most operating systems allow you to rotate the image without any software. Under Mac it's right click and then "quick actions". There is a similar functionality in Windows.
Finally there are also some online image editors you can use:

https://www.online-image-editor.com/
https://pixlr.com/x/

We will add for sure editing functionality for Showtime Image Gallery. Currently we are at the process of preparing our extensions for Joomla 4.

Hello Lefteris,

Only thing is that I don't need to rotate the image. The images that are in 'portrait' modus om my pc are not rotated. But when I upload them then they are rotated. Not before.
And when I open those images on my pc and save them again without doing anything, the images are not rotated when I upload them.
So they only need to be safed again and then everythings goed right.

Good luck with preparing for Joomla 4 :-)
Try to open the image on your PC in the browser before you upload it to see it's actual orientation. As I wrote before Showtime does not change the image orientation. Opening the image before uploading on your PC on a browser should give you the same result as after uploading.
If you are using Windows just try to rotate the image using right click. Even if you are viewing the image correctly, rotating twice may fix the metadata and you will not have to use an editor.

Hello Lefteris,

When I open some images in a browser it's allright, not rotated.

Greetings,
Ton
Can you please send me a link to the page with the issue and email me the original image which is displayed correctly on your browser? Can you also try a different lightbox from the component settings just in case there is an issue with the one you are using?

Regards

Hello Lefteris,

here the link to the page

How can I send the image(s)?

Thanks!
Greetings, Ton
Hi Ton!

I have sent you an email. Just reply and attach the files.

Regards

Done, thanks!
It seems that you are totally right. Under some cases the orientation is lost.
I will try to find a workaround. Until then you can go to component options and disable "Resize originals" and "Watermark" options. This will probably fix the issue.

Regards

Hello Lefteris,

Thanks for the update!
I will try out disable "Resize originals" and "Watermark" options.

Greetings,
Ton
Did this fixed your issue? Note that changing the option will not affect the images you have uploaded already.

Regards

Hello Lefteris.

It didn't fix the issue.
I've uploaded the images again.

Greetings,
Ton
Thank you for the valuable feedback you have provided on this issue.

Hello Lefteris,

Any news on this issue?
Thanks!

Hi Ton,

No, unfortunately not yet. Did you face this issue again?

Regards

Hello Lefteris,

Unfortunately the problem is still there:

Hello Lefteris,

The problem still exists. I noticed that 'portrait orientated' scaled images have a rotated preview and the landscape orientated not. When I click on the preview the large images are not rotated, so that is oke.
Do you know what the cause is yet?
Right know I'm facing this problem while uploading images to the image gallery on new pages for the Projects in this website: https://astrumgroen.nl/projecten
Maybe you don't see this issue because I have to get this right for my client and therefore I will cropp these images in Photoshop, upload again and see what happens.
Thanks for your time!
Hi Ton,

I just sent you the development version of the extension to your email. It should fix the issue.
If not please let me know.

Regards

Hello Lefteris.

I've tested this development version and now it goes well :-)
While uploading you can see some images are rotated (when there not uploaded/managed for 100%) but then they are rotated back so they are in the right position.

How should I upgrade the existing gallery with the problem?
Should I just install the development version?

Thanks!
Hi Ton,

The first thumbnail is generated by javascript client side that's why it is incorrect until the file is uploaded completely.
Yes, installing the development version over the current one should be fine. Do not uninstall your current version because the component removes it's data when uninstalling.
Please let me know if you find any issues.

Regards
